It doesn't play badly on purpose. It just doesn't look at the whole board.

plays fine with your thumb

Chess on a 3D board against an engine written from scratch — minimax with alpha-beta pruning, no libraries. Six levels, and what changes between them isn't just search depth: it's what the bot fails to see. On APPRENTICE it only checks the pieces around the square it just moved to, so it hangs its queen to the bishop that came from the far corner — the mistake everyone makes while learning, not a randomized blunder. From MASTER up it sees the whole board and gives nothing back. Full rules: castling, en passant, promotion, stalemate, threefold repetition, the 50-move rule and insufficient material. The pieces are turned at load time from their profiles, like a real wooden set.
